I think that it would be really stupid of stevie to lose his focus ...despite having its best ever quarter, Apple is the still the niche cool company and not the rock solid consumer technology company it always wanted to be....

A new marketing application from Kraft is leveraging the iPod phenomenon in a way that goes beyond podcasting (define). Owners of the ubiquitous device who download the company's "Greatest Hits of Summer" widget can carry a library of over 100 Kraft-inspired recipes with them wherever they go.

The download, promoted at kraftfoods.com, offers grilling ideas, desserts, and additional recipes featuring Kraft ingredients. Users can browse recipes using the iPod's scroll wheel and look up ingredients while at the grocery store.

A big-ticket investment by three corporate heavyweights in a little-known start-up that provides Internet access over electrical lines has sparked renewed interest in a technology that's never come close to living up to its billing.

For several years, many have hoped that the technology, called broadband over power lines, or BPL, would allow electric companies to become a viable third alternative to the cable and telephone companies providing high-speed access to the Internet. It's a sentiment seconded in recent years by the Federal Communications Commission.

Technical limitations and a bad habit of interfering with local emergency radios, however, have made BPL a tantalizing near-miss for the tech industry.

But last week's investment by Web search leader Google, the media conglomerate Hearst and bankers at Goldman Sachs in a Germantown, Md., company called Current Communications Group has many wondering if the time is finally right for the oft-ignored BPL. Current didn't disclose the amount of the investment, but The Wall Street Journal reported it was about $100 million. IBM has also started making noise in this market, announcing on Monday that it is partnering with Houston-based power utility CenterPoint Energy to build a BPL network.

A preliminary summary of governmental views claims there's a "convergence of views" supporting a new organization to oversee crucial Internet functions, most likely under the aegis of the United Nations or the International Telecommunications Union.

The AP called it a milestone in the maturity of streaming video online, which has come a long way since a failed Victoria's Secret webcast in '99. One Live 8 producer, Ken Ehrlich, called the AOL webcast a template for the future. "Not to negate the importance of television, but I really think the Internet generation has come of age and the numbers have multiplied to a point of real change," he told the L.A. Times. AOL opened the door here and once it's open it ain't going to close."

There's a new domain for Web sites that are used in conjunction with wireless phones and devices. It's ".mobi."

The new suffix was approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers at a meeting last week in Amsterdam. The first Web sites for mobile devices will be ready in 2006.

Mobile phone providers and marketers of handsets wanted the new domain name and have established a joint venture to encourage companies and Web site designers to create mobile Web pages. The move to create ".mobi" is similar to recent moves to create a domain to flag adult/porn-related sites.

Companies backing the new domain include Ericsson, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung, T-Mobile, and Vodafone. They say that having more Web pages optimized for mobile and handheld devices will spur consumers to upgrade their phones. Obviously the companies backing the domain also hope telecom companies will upgrade their technology to support ".mobi" pages

In an interview with The New York Times, CardSystems Solutions CEO John Perry said the company have been illigitimately retaining consumer records. Why? "Research purposes," Perry told The Times. "We should not have been doing that." No, you should't have, John. Under rules established by Visa and MasterCard, processors like CardSystems are forbidden from retaining cardholder information after handling transactions. "CardSystems provides services and is supposed to pass that information on to the banks and not keep it," Joshua Peirez, a MasterCard official, told the Times. "They were keeping it."

Privacy has been an important issue whenever people talk about internet advertising.

A former top PR person at Microsoft has apparently jumped ship to do PR for 180solutions, a company considered one of the worst offenders of surreptitious installs. 180solutions has been trying to clean up its spyware reputation ever since it convinced some clueless VCs to invest $40 million in the company without even realizing why the company was so hated.

However, so far, its reputation is still pretty dirty, as the company was also caught stealing affiliate program commissions by slipping in its own affiliate codes to URLs, and, more recently, buying its largest distributor, who was often accused of causing the sneaky installs. This last move, in particular, is quite questionable. Why did the company reward a distributor it felt was doing questionable things by buying them out? Wouldn't it have made a lot more sense to simply cut the company off as a distributor, if they were really serious about avoiding sneaky installs?

It seems like this particular PR person has plenty of questions to answer.

The Internet's primary oversight body, ICANN approved a plan Wednesday to create a virtual red-light district, setting the stage for pornographic Web sites to use new addresses ending in "xxx"

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers said it would begin negotiations with ICM Registry Inc., run by British businessman Stuart Lawley, to iron out technical issues and prices for the new Web addresses.

Adult-oriented sites, a $12 billion industry, probably could begin buying "xxx" addresses as early as fall or winter depending on ICM's plans, ICANN spokesman Kieran Baker said.

The new pornography suffix was among 10 under consideration by the regulatory group, which also recently approved addresses ending in "jobs" and "travel."

ICM contends the "xxx" Web addresses, which it plans to sell for $60 a year, will protect children from online smut if adult sites voluntarily adopt the suffix so filtering software used by families can more effectively block access to those sites.

The $60 price is roughly ten times higher than prices other companies charge for dot-com names.

"It will further help to protect kids," said John Morris, staff counsel at the Washington-based Center for Democracy and Technology. Morris predicted some adult sites will choose to buy "xxx" Web addresses but others will continue to use dot-com.

The impact of social networking especially in markets like South Korea,Japan,and China is tremendous.A korean social networking network called cyworld is so successfull that 17 million people (almost 25 percent of its population !)is connects through it .They have used an innvoative credit points called acorns which members could swap for cute graphics and other goodies to adorn their pages.Members could also gift these acorns.Some brands have even started offering acorns as gift certificates.

Rarely do we see a socially admired brand ...Something like a WWF(no not the dishum dishum one ....) or a Body Shop or a Cafe Direct or in internet terms a Mozilla,or a firefox or a Linux ,now this list is getting longer ......
Rarely do you see these kind of brands engaging in subtle and aggressive marketing mode adopting desperate tactics like Viral Marketing and Buzz Marketing ..
It jus punctures the whole warmth that people see in the brand in terms of inherent goodness in the product . It could be support for a good cause or the simple old funda of givin a great product for less.....

Creative Commons , an admirable organization doing a really tough job of ensuring copyright protection and that too on a medium like the Internet got caught on the wrong foot.
Apparently the large section of CC admirers didn't like them engaging in a viral mktg campaign with bzzagent one of the worlds foremost viral marketing specialists but with a questionable track record.

im sure that CC would bounce back and they would have learned a lesson or two about mass marketing.....
and lot of other potential feel good brands would also have learnt their lessons .

Truly a remarkable achievement from a product oriented company.To fanthom the magnitude of what toyota has achieved through scion , one has to understand the way products and thereby brands are conceived,mostly on the basis of functional requirements....
all the corolla's and the tercel's ...........
and then Lexus happened , the japanese answer to the juggernaut the jerry's were havin the highly engineered luxury car segment .

But this baby takes the cake for toyota's Customer and Market Trendspotting abilities .

Being the smartass i am ...i always shirk away from taking notes so as to devote my full attention to thinking and processing info when im listening ...most of the times this works great for me as i am able to create the smart ass impression by coming up with insights and meaningful question ....but sometimes i also stumble about the issue when i have to really pull back all that went through during the last meeting ...despite looking like a dork ...i think its better i start carryin a note pad along ...works great to scribble and scratch caricatures when the meetings are boring :D !

The whole "Consulting " makeover story of Infosys is making me sick.They have been talking about it for the last 5 years ....where is the moolah boys ?You been shopping aroun in US and Europe trying to buy a consulting practice rather than built one .....Even fellow banagalore firm Wipro,is also trying to grow up into the big boys league.
But what most of them fail to realize is that ,merely having a stacked up cash table and a shopping wish list aint gonna help much .The work culture must evolve from the software sweatshop to a business solution based consulting practice.This requires domain experts not only with years of experience,but also sound interpersonal skills in understanding intricate issues of clients which cant be necessarily be put in excel sheets and analyzed.Yeah Indian firms are good at the analytical game but the other one is a different ball game.If indeed they knew what they were chewing into , I think they should have started with the Indian as well other Asian markets,albeit a less profitable one in the short term but nevertheless a great opputurtunity in understanding their own organizational issues as well gaining foothold in the markets of tomorrow.

jus a few random thoughts collected over a conversation i had with my principal of my The Times School Of Marketing ,

the mobile media is indeed going to redifne the true nature of info and data delivery ....it wud also compltely redefine the users expectaions....rather than seeking information from a fixed point or a even a pc with a wireless web access....the smaller dumb terminals called the mobile devices would make it possible to get info and data on-demand !....

....check a review ....maybe even peer reviews,watch a trailor and then book a ticket for a movie while you are on the road to the town....you can maybe even book a table for dinner early, if the movie gets disppointing and you are contemplating an earlier than expected exit.....or maybe if u like it give a live on the spot shout alert to all your friends on how much you are enjoyin the movie ....maybe even gift a memorablia to a friend who missed the show ... :)

obviously the title is delcious and inviting ,a lil kinky perhaps well..i quite agree to all of the above...most of the time when we are highly strung ..esp in the times that we are livin ..all it takes one liberated dose of a whimsical steeplechase...trust and this is just one of those days ...when doing a completely close door private visit to the cyber pornwallah(pornwalli) in this case could be such a relieving experience...esp when that person happens to be a boringly self posessed wimp like me...hmm wonder how many of my offline friends are reading this as of now....oh yeah i do visit porn sites and excuse me not for any online strategising or consumer research ....but mostly for my bout of voyeurism....but that was long back ...hm esp since high school ....but to be honest ....the bite seems to present a pretty refreshing look at online pornography(not porn !) and it takes the intimacy of blogging to another level...one the one hand while i say this let me also add that the same anonymity of web might be allowing a kinky SOB (in CAPS) to swindle a lot free admiration behind this whole facade...whatever be it ......i guess i 'll have one more ...

The two names that often emerge in the minds of a bschool graduate or even an aspirant is Mckinsey and Goldman Sachs you can even call em the Temples of MBA-dom .....and for the more focussed and the ones who dont get swayed over by the media hype there is one more name BCG yup the same guys who have made the BCG Matrix, the essential appetizer to strategic management..hmmm am still dreaming of one of the ivy leagues or their equally inspiring continental counterparts.....and maybe this is NOT what i wanna turn out to be....a problem solving zombie.....believe me i respect the skills and values of george stalk ....but guess he is too methodical and too much in present tense to turn the mirror to the bigger picture...yet this is one of the most exciting stories i have read so far ....definitely worth a read.............
